WMD Monday 28 April 2008

A quick reminder that this coming Monday 28th April is International Workers Memorial Day.

This is an annual health & safety day that remembers those who have been killed while at work or have died of industrial diseases. It also is a campaigning day to improve health and safety at work to try and prevent such unnecessary deaths.

I think that many people know of a friend, relative or work colleague who has died prematurely from a work related illness or accident.

There are local events across the country. Check out the TUC website to see if anything is happening near you.

There is a rally and March in London. Gather at Holland Street, London SE1 beside the Tate Modern at 10.30 and then march to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) headquarters in Southwark Street for a rally with speakers.

Next march to City Hall, London SE1 for the main rally with speakers (from trade unions, campaigners and the families of those killed at or by work).

I'm not dead but most of the time I wish I was, I fell at work broke my back and ended up with a lesion of the spinal cord, I think more has to be done to help the living, the dead have gone, under Labour those left with massive injuries are now treated like we are work shy lazy worthless people, I now feel so guilty getting benefits.

I think people need to realize that people who are left crippled unable to walk unable to do almost anything need more help, not told you need to work, even if it;s begging

Hi Robert
Hope I don’t seem patronising. While I am really sorry to hear about your “accident” at work, I do think that more needs to be done for the dead and the injured. Also that there should be a proper emphasis on preventing people being hurt in the first place.

I’m also not sure that your understanding of the government’s attitude to disabled people is right either. I am absolutely certain that the government does not think that people who suffer disabilities are “work shy or lazy worthless”

..sure...that's why labour does so much for the armed forces servicemen who are injured...that's why so many coronors have publicly highlighted the appalling shortage of equipment and how it led to their deaths. (The Govt even took them to court to try to gag them) How many times did Stalin go to the MOD when he was Chancellor? Remind us. This Govt and Stalin are totally out of touch - the best thing he did for this country was bottle out of the election so that everyone can truly see what a pigs ear he made of the economy. I laugh every time the iron Chancellor comes on the TV with his big clunking fist to tell us how low inflation is.
Can you explain the term "No more boom nor bust"....?

Hi Anon
While I think more should be done for injured service personal I think that you will find that the present Labour Government has done significantly more than previous governments. This should not be a political point; you and I have lived through decades of British service personal sacrificing themselves for their Country. The Labour government have spent far more on disabled and rehabilitation facilities and have dramatically increased compensation and pension levels but they are now the bad guys?

BTW – we still have low inflation and high growth. The US is apparently in or close to a recession at the moment. No doubt this is Gordon’s fault as well. “Boom or bust” is one thing but surely you of all people must understand that markets go up and down in a capitalist society – that is the nature of the beast! What do you want as an alternative? Revolution Now???
